UV stands for Ultraviolet, a type of radiation emitted by the sun. Whilst low levels can be beneficial to health, promoting the formation of vitamin D in the body, prolonged exposure to UV rays can be very dangerous. UV rays can cause premature ageing of the skin, damage to DNA and even skin cancer. In fact, studies from the World Health Organisation indicate a threefold increase in diseases caused by harmful UV radiation within five years.
They can also enter homes through windows, fading carpets and furniture in the process. The damage being done to the ozone layer by greenhouse gases is creating holes which allow more of these harmful rays through.
All our made to measure awnings are manufactured using UV-rated fabrics. This means that they increase the exposure time of human skin to direct sunlight, in accordance with UV Standard 801. All of our patio awnings are UV-rated 40, 60 or 80, so they will not only create shading, atmosphere and look attractive, but also increase natural exposure time by 40, 60 or even 80 times.
